Based in Dane County, where both veterinary and human oncology lead the way, Czar's Promise supports pets diagnosed with cancer and the families who love them.

Why this mission? Animals develop the same types of cancer as humans and often receive similar treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. But more than that—what helps one species can help the other. We spoke with Beth Viney, Founder, Executive Director, and Czar's mother, about the heart behind this inspiring organization.

Cancer is a difficult journey for any family. Czar's Promise offers emotional and financial support, connecting families with referrals, funding resources, and compassionate care when they need it most.

Czar's Story

Czar was a Great Pyrenees who looked like a baby polar bear when Beth Viney first met him at just four weeks old in 2000. She described him as her "Tom Cruise"—he had her at hello. From the moment he came home at eight weeks, Beth's life changed. Czar was her one in a million: a gentle giant who brought comfort and joy to countless lives.

For five years, Czar served as an assistant therapy dog through the Pet Pals Program at American Family Children's Hospital, working closely with pediatric oncology patients. He also visited senior living centers, participated in Read to a Dog programs, and provided in-home therapy for teens facing challenges.

After retiring from hospital service, Czar was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2012. He underwent amputation and chemotherapy, defying expectations and living another 19 months. When he passed on December 20, 2013, Beth made a promise—to help other families facing the same difficult journey.

That promise became reality in 2018 with the founding of Czar's Promise. In their first year, they supported three dogs through cancer treatment. Today, they've helped over 280 dogs and cats—and continue to grow.

Where Healing Begins

Czar's Promise provides support to partners including American Family Children's Hospital for Pediatric Cancer Research and UW School of Veterinary Medicine for Companion Animal Cancer Research.

After the initial conversation with a family, Czar's Promise steps in with whatever support is needed: helping families navigate a cancer diagnosis, connecting them with board-certified veterinary oncologists, providing referrals, facilitating emotional support groups, or connecting them with funding applications. As the need continues to grow, Madison's central location for veterinary and human oncology draws families from across the Midwest seeking treatment for their pets.

Real Stories, Real Impact

Founder Beth Viney shares that some of her proudest moments come from the stories of lives changed through their support. Eight years ago, Czar's Promise helped two canine officers receive treatment and return to duty. Another success story is Shelly, a golden retriever and registered service dog who supports her veteran owner living with PTSD. Thanks to Czar's Promise, Shelly received the care she needed to continue her essential role.

Beth emphasizes that dogs aren't just pets—they're family members, protectors, and healers. Seeing them return to their lives is the heart of the mission.

She also credits Park Bank for being a key partner in their success. With a deep understanding of nonprofit operations, Park Bank has helped streamline internal processes, saving time and resources. Beth is especially grateful for the guidance from Tom, Val, and Che, whose expertise has made a meaningful difference. "We lead with heart and compassion," she says, "and Park Bank understands that."

Inspiring Hope Walk

Czar's Promise is gearing up for its biggest event of the year—the 7th Annual Inspiring Hope Walk, taking place Sunday, October 12th at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg. This heartwarming gathering brings together hundreds of participants, including nearly 300 dogs, all united by a shared mission: to raise awareness and funds for families navigating pet cancer.

The event features music, food, a silent auction, and a vibrant tent village with over 50 community partners, veterinary professionals, and sponsors. The most moving moment begins with the walk itself, led by the true heroes—families and dogs currently battling cancer. For Beth Viney, this is the heart of the event and a powerful reminder of why Czar's Promise exists.

The need for their services continues to grow, and while cancer may not slow down, neither will their commitment. Their goal remains clear: to give pets a better quality of life and the gift of more time with the people who love them. Every step taken is a step toward hope.
