For 100 years, Easterseals Wisconsin has helped turn barriers into bridges for people with disabilities across the state. Founded in 1926 as The Wisconsin Association for the Disabled, the organization began with a simple but powerful mission: to increase independence, maximize opportunities, minimize barriers, and enhance quality of life. Over the past century, Easterseals Wisconsin has grown from a small grassroots effort into a trusted institution, serving thousands through programs that support independence, education, vocational rehabilitation, accessibility, and meaningful community inclusion.
Celebrating a Century of Service
Throughout its history, Easterseals Wisconsin has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the communities it serves. What began as a focused effort to support people with disabilities has grown into a statewide network of innovative programs and services rooted in independence, access, and belonging.
In 1938, Easterseals Wisconsin expanded its impact with the establishment of Camp Wawbeek in Wisconsin Dells, made possible through a generous land donation from the Upham family. Today, Camp Wawbeek holds the distinction of being the longest continuously operated Easterseals Wisconsin camp in the nation, offering accessible outdoor experiences that foster confidence, connection, and lifelong memories.
The organization’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges continued with the launch of the nationally recognized FARM (Farm Assessment and Rehabilitation Methods) Program in 1989. Designed to help farmers return to work after a disabling injury or illness, the program has achieved a remarkable 97% success rate, supporting thousands of farmers in continuing their livelihoods and preserving family farms across Wisconsin. In 1992, Easterseals Wisconsin further responded to community needs by establishing the Wisconsin Elks/Easterseals Wisconsin Respite Camp, created to address the critical shortage of respite services for families and caregivers.
Today, Easterseals Wisconsin serves individuals and families in every county across the state. Beyond its camps and agricultural programs, the organization offers self-employment services, guardianship programs, and individualized supports, making it a trusted resource for people navigating life’s challenges. For Easterseals Wisconsin, impact is about more than reaching every corner of the state, it’s about truly belonging in each community they serve. Each connection strengthens that bond, reinforcing their role as a source of support, hope, and opportunity for generations.
Strength in Partnership
One of the biggest challenges for Easterseals Wisconsin has been navigating an increasingly competitive funding landscape while working to meet the growing needs of the individuals and families we serve. As more organizations seek support from a limited pool of donors and grants, sustaining funding alone is no longer enough. Strengthening awareness of the Easterseals Wisconsin brand, purpose, and mission has become critical to ensuring that people understand the life-changing impact of the organization’s work and feeling inspired enough to invest in it.
That impact becomes most real through direct connection. When staff members meet clients and their families, they are reminded why this work matters. Hearing personal stories, witnessing resilience, and seeing firsthand how services change lives brings meaning to the mission beyond numbers or outcomes.
“It’s a feeling that stays with you, knowing you are a part of something that truly changes lives—something greater than yourself," says Stacey Murnighan, Director of Marketing and Communications at Easterseals Wisconsin. "It’s truly surreal to be here during such an important milestone in our organization’s history.”
