Western Landscape

In 2015, brothers Elijah and Sam Skalsky had a simple goal: mow enough lawns to help pay for college. Armed with determination and a few pieces of equipment, they started with eight yards that first summer. By the course of the first two years, they were maintaining 70 lawns a week.

That rapid growth told them something important: there was real demand for reliable, quality lawn care in their community.

Building Something Bigger

The brothers' motivation came from an unexpected source. Their mother had a frustrating experience with a contractor who lacked honesty and clear communication. Elijah and Sam decided they could do better, and Western Landscape was born with a foundation built on reliability, transparency, and straight talk with clients.

Between 2018 and 2020, the business took major steps forward. They hired their first associates, became a legal entity, and moved operations to Fitchburg. What started as a summer job had become a legitimate business with real potential.

Roles That Work

Today, Elijah and Sam have carved out complementary roles that play to their strengths. Elijah focuses on sales and marketing, bringing in new business and building client relationships. Sam handles operations, ensuring every project gets completed to their standards.

Their team has grown to include six salespeople, three operations staff, and shop managers. Even their younger brother has joined as production manager, keeping the family business truly in the family. For Elijah and Sam, working together remains one of the most rewarding aspects of what they've built.

What Sets Western Landscape Apart

Western Landscape has built its reputation on quality work and a dedicated team. They maintain a strong field crew and keep clients informed about project costs and progress every step of the way. To minimize errors and unexpected expenses, they only take on projects designed by their own team.

This attention to detail shows in their client reviews and satisfaction rates. But their commitment extends beyond individual projects. They actively support the Verona community by providing free mulching services for local soccer fields and schools, sponsoring community events, and recently helping with a car wash fundraiser for Holy Family Academy.

Looking Ahead

Western Landscape's vision for the future centers on their people. They want to compensate their associates at levels that reflect the skill and effort that goes into every project. Too often, landscaping gets viewed as lower-tier work, but Elijah and Sam are working to change that perception by building a highly trained team that can complete projects efficiently and effectively.

This year marks a significant milestone: Western Landscape's 10th anniversary. They're celebrating with an expansion of their Verona warehouse to accommodate more equipment and provide additional workspace. They're also excited about their first nomination for Best of Madison, recognition that validates their commitment to excellence.

After nearly a decade in business, Western Landscape continues to operate on the principles that started it all: showing up, doing quality work, and treating clients with honesty and reliability. From eight lawns to a thriving operation, the Skalsky brothers have built something that serves their community while supporting the associates who make it all possible.
