Black Girl Magic Educational Services is a Black-led organization dedicated to creating safe, affirming, and liberating programming where Black girls are able to showcase their gifts and brilliance. Through school and community-based initiatives, their mission is to empower, inspire, and celebrate the unique potential of Black girls.
Origins and Growth
Rosa Thompson, the Founding Executive Director, brings a decade of classroom teaching experience to the organization. Her passion for education and supporting Black girls led to the formation of Black Girl Magic, which officially became a nonprofit in 2021.
The organization's journey began in 2015 at Hawthorne Elementary School, where was a classroom teacher and co-facilitated a Black Girl Magic group for four years. Their longest-running school-based program remains an after-school group at Sherman Middle School. The pandemic became a pivotal moment for Black Girl Magic. Unable to host their annual conference, the team used this time to strategize growth and expand their reach.
During this period, they introduced Sister Circles, a virtual initiative that connected girls across different school districts. This program revealed a significant need for targeted support for Black girls, ultimately helping Black Girl Magic extend its impact beyond a single school.
Navigating Growth and Challenges
The organization's most significant challenge has been managing rapid expansion while maintaining program quality and authenticity. Rosa and her team are intentional about their partnerships, ensuring they can provide meaningful programming to each group they serve.
A highlight of their work is the remarkable consistency of participants. Girls often continue with the program from elementary through high school, with some even joining the Youth Employee program. This program employs five high school girls who mentor younger participants and assist with events, while developing their leadership skills, demonstrating the organization's commitment to long-term community development.
Programs and Opportunities
Black Girl Magic offers diverse programming throughout the year:
- Weekly school-based programs open to Black girls
- Melanated Mindfulness Summer week-long program
- Pedal and Pixels: A summer initiative partnering with Bikes for Kids Wisconsin that combines cycling and photography
- Assistance with community events like Toys for Tots
- Black Girl Magic Saturdays, featuring skill-sharing sessions with community professionals
Annual Black Girl Magic Conference
From 60 girls in 2018 to an expected 675 in 2025, the conference has become a landmark event. This year at Madison College promises to be unforgettable, featuring 14-year-old CEO Zoe Oli as keynote speaker, alongside breakout sessions, a talent showcase, and opportunities for connection.
Looking Forward
Today, Black Girl Magic serves over 1,000 girls annually across Dane County and the Madison Metropolitan School District. Their upcoming Melanated Mindfulness camp begins in June, offering journaling, art, and yoga in the morning, and exciting field trips, including a day at Discovery World.
For those interested in supporting this transformative organization, volunteer opportunities are available. Allies can help with conference setup, while Black women are invited to assist during the event itself.
Black Girl Magic continues to create spaces where Black girls can learn, grow, and celebrate their unique brilliance.
